Reading was a popular recreational activity especially during the winter months when other forms of activity were limited. Before radio and television books, newspapers and magazines were an important part of most peoples lives and formed a large part of their wider education. During this decade there was an American Author who had won the Nobel Prize of Literature. The Authors name was Sinclair Lewis "...for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humour, new types of characters".
